Preacher

GARTH ENNIS/STEVE DILLON/DC/VERTIGO

PREACHER is the comic you always read first after you pick up your weekly books, preferably while voiding one’s bowels.  Trust us, this comic, which shares the coveted ULTRA PIG PICK category with “SIP,” was meant to be appreciated from one’s commode.  The most exhilarating read in comics today, an issue of PREACHER will end far too quickly for anyone.

A wandering preacher, empowered with the all-powerful Word of God, sets out to find why the Almighty has deserted its post.  Joined by the estranged love of his life and a seemingly friendly Irish vampire, Jesse Custer embarks on an epic adventure that is the most mesmerizing in comics.  Concepts of personal honor and loyalty, friendship and love; Ennis (nobody writes dialogue better) celebrates them and challenges them in a plot that is relentless for its dramatic energy, often furious pace (Issue 37 is one of the single most absorbing comics I’ve ever read) and ferocious outbursts of violence and black humor.  Can Custer take all that is thrown at him, betrayal and loss, pain and death, and still remain an upright man of conviction determined to bring the Almighty to task?  Guided by the spirit of John Wayne, hunted by a world dominating secret organization bent on bringing forth the Apocalypse (led by Starr, the most well written villain in comics), caught between the politics of Heaven and Hell, hurt by those closest to him, Custer faces seemingly insurmountable odds, not to mention a kid named Arseface…

Ennis and Dillon concluded the PREACHER saga in August (God bless creator-owned characters), but almost the entire saga is available in tradepaperback form, with the final arc sure to be reprinted soon.
